Gallery of Social & Political Art
"What Is Freedom?"

Opening Reception:
September 10, 2005 6-9:30pm.
Gallery Hours:
Sat & Sun 2-6pm.

Through a wide range of media, artists explore the temporal nature of the definition of freedom. This is evident by the recurring themes present in many of the artists' works, which confront the political climate of the world today. Many reveal that the term "freedom" has inevitably come to be associated with the war while other focus on different forms of freedom.

An alumni of Mass College of Art, Jen Ryan, will be exhibiting five pieces from her series, 2004. These works address the United States' efforts to create and sustain democracy through force. Ms. Ryan uses toy soldiers to create images inspired by televised news coverage of Operation Iraqi freedom. The artist's work confronts the viewer with the idea that the realities of war are experienced by the majority of the public in a second-hand and surreal manner.

Pip Brant's, Bush 'W'oodoo Parlor is an interactive work that invites the audience to apply "curses" or "blessings" with pins to Bush look-alike voodoo dolls. The artist seeks to empower a potentially disenchanted populous by giving them the opportunity to tack their opinions onto the dolls. Pip Brant has exhibited her work internationally and has been honored with a fellowship at the South Florida Cultural Consortium and residency with the Hungarian Multicultural Artists Exchange.
